As women get older, their bodies change especially when they go through menopause. Menopause is a long and normal process that all women have to undergo. When a woman enters the mid-thirties towards her 40s, hormone production begins to fluctuate and such a fluctuation increases until her period ends up usually around her 50s. The years (usually between 3 to 5 years) before your last menstrual period is called perimenopause. Your last and final menstrual period marks the start of your menopause. If you have experienced not having your period for over a year, then you are very sure that you have experienced menopause.

Many if not most women who have gone through menopause disliked this process because of the problems associated with it. Symptoms for menopause can include hot flashes, irritability, stress, and anxiety, sleeping disorders, depression, osteoporosis and cardiovascular related diseases. Many women also begin to experience weight gain because of the declining hormones that tend to increase the appetite. This is the one aspect that most women hate; especially those who are figure conscious.

But other factors aside from menopause lead to weight gain. For one, reduced activity and lesser exercise among women who get older can definitely lead to weight gain. Metabolism decreases as one gets older because of muscle mass loss. Losing muscle mass means burning less amounts of calories. With lower metabolism, people don’t adjust their calorie intakes. An increase in calories leads to gaining weight. Genetics play as well a role in making it difficult for an individual to maintain a certain body figure, especially if your family is genetically more on the fat side.

Managing the symptoms of menopause can be done in several ways ranging from merely eating a healthy diet to acupuncture, and other alternative types of therapy. But as what many may fail to realize, exercise or a regular activity program can help women manage the uncomfortable problems and related health issues associated with menopause. Besides, exercise provides numerous other benefits.

Women who are undergoing menopause may experience feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. Exercise produces endorphins that help reduce stress and improves your overall mood. As everybody knows, exercise definitely helps you lose weight. Research also indicates that exercise helps increase levels of estrogen that in turn reduces hot flashes that one may experience during menopause. Osteoporosis is a problem associated with menopause. Exercising strengthens bones to help prevent osteoporosis. Exercise also reduces the risk of health problems like heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure.

It is never too late to start exercising with the many rewards and benefits that come along with it. Even if you’ve never had any formal type of exercise training, simple things you enjoy like walking, jogging, swimming, cycling and even yard work would be a good place to start. You could also exercise with the help of fitness and exercise equipments in the comfort of the home or you could avail of gym memberships and enroll yourself in group fitness classes.

You still can have control over your bodies even if you age. One helpful way of easing the menopause experience would be to exercise and to take care of one’s health.
